Nice for booting from though, and some other uses. So in your opinion, reasonable fast external drives sur as first generation SSDs are OK, right? I think those faster SSDs, running on a fast connection, aren't very necessary for just photo editing, and given their expense, overkill. I am not on the move a lot and in need of processing my pics. Fine on a desktop, not so much on a motel room bed, airplane seat, bus, etc. YMMV, but I like to have some room inside my traveling laptops for everything I need so I don't have to mess with dongles on my lap. And I dunno about the number of ports on your machine, but remember it will be charging through USB-C and you might need a card reader and of course backup so that might mean a bunch of stuff. You probably don't need to carry all your images with you, and even though drives, etc, are light, they are another thing to carry, lose, break, etc. Look at OWC's prices since they have good stuff.

Some of these type drives are cheaper than M.2 NVME's plus enclosure, but slower.
I find USB 3.1 externals more than fast enough for my photo storage (and small, like Samsung's T5). And of course any external might be powered via it as well. It can do power and data, both are different rates. USB-C isn't really a transfer option, it's a type of connector. And remember, you'll need backup drives or cloud storage for backup of both the boot drive and the externals storing your images. Or just move around what you need on the machine itself Using for example Lightroom Classic's smart previews. One benefit of using parametric image editors instead of say Bridge is that you can edit without having the external attached. You confirm one can go with external storage for photo editing.Īs a starter I'll go with regular SSDs external drives and maybe move to M.2 later. I'll go with 16GB RAM because I am not in a hurry. I purchased the 1 TB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe combo from OWC (OWC Envoy Express & 1 TB OWC Aura P12 M.2 NVME) with $23 off the combo.Īs to whether it will meet your needs, I can only say this setup more than meets my needs.
I had concerns about the 8 GB RAM being enough, but it's hasn't been an issue - at all.Ģ. I'm also using Topaz Denoise AI, Sharpen AI, & Gigapixel AI.ġ. Trying to decide between the two but leaning towards Affinity Photo.

I had been hoping to wait for the next generation of Apple Silicon but had to get the base mini since that is what was in stock.įor photo editing I'm using Affinity Photo & Pixelmator Pro (had AP & PixelMator Pro was a $20 upgrade). I also have several regular hard drives for archiving & backup (rotating with off-site).

I'm retired also & I'm using an M1 Mac Mini 8/256 with a 1 TB NVMe SSD via Thunderbolt 3, having come from a 2008 8-core Mac Pro 16 GB RAM 500 GB SSD (which finally gave up the ghost). Moreover I'm used to carrying external SSDs and HDDs around. My photo library is already about 450GB and it's growing so it wouldn't fit into a 512GB internal drive.1TB would be a minimum anyway. As you might not want to take the USB drive with you everywhere you go and 256GB would probably be very limiting. Will work out cheaper than buying an external drive and probably be faster too.Įdit: Although if you are talking about a laptop here, even with an external drive, I wouldn't get one with less than 500GB SSD internal. Then look for an M.2 NVME SSD which is faster than 1000Mbyte/s (the max speed of USB-C).

I don't do extremely demanding work such as video or music and I don't do it for professional purposes. On an external SSD, I would recommend getting a USB-C NVME M.2 enclosure/caddy from Amazon, like this:Īs of now I don't have M.2 SSDs, only old school 500GB SSDs. I use neither Photos neither LR but softs that don't rely on a proprietary catalog: DxO PL and Adobe Bridge. Then manually copy the library file from your old Mac to your external SSD, like this guide here: When transferring data from your old Mac, you will just need to make sure you don't transfer the photos initially (can unselect in the transfer tool).
